5.0 out of 5 stars If you want a coffeemaker, look no further, May 11, 2008
I have this one in black, and have been making coffee at least once a day for the past three weeks. I was debating between this 10-cup thermal ($80), the 12-cup thermal ($130), and the 12-cup glass carafe with warming plate ($80), all by Cuisinart. In the end, I wanted something that used less electricity, so I went with the thermal. The added bonus with a thermal is that the coffee taste doesn't change from your first cup to your second cup a few hours later. I finally decided to save $50 and buy the 10-cup thermal because everything else was the same except for the 10 ounce difference (both coffeemakers brew 5 oz cups). I purchased mine from a different store, and I found out that there was no gold cone filter. I called up Cuisinart and they said depending on where you purchased the coffeemaker, it may use paper cones, or it may come with the gold cone filter. They graciously sent me a gold cone for free. So after 3 weeks:

5.0 out of 5 stars There's an easy way to make the water hotter, January 16, 2011

I first used this coffee maker at my parents' house and was impressed with the flavor. For a drip coffee maker, this brews excellent coffee (I used to use a French press daily).

I was surprised to see all the comments about lukewarm coffee, as I hadn't noticed this problem. I do use cream so it concerned me - you have to have hot coffee if you are going to add cold cream.

Turns out, reading the manual gave me the answer I needed: that button for 1-4 cups "provides doulbe heating of the water, so coffee is piping hot." You can use this button no matter how many cups you brew to get the water hotter. I'm having no problems at all.

Hope this helps!

I read every review anybody ever wrote for a coffee maker. Conclusion: Somebody doesn't like something about every coffee maker that's ever been made.
What I've found in the month that I've had it: The carafe keeps the coffee hot for at least 3 hours. It pours without going all over the counter. I can't make the thing drip one drop. I still pour my cup over the sink from years with a different pot where about half of the coffee went down the drain. Not this one. Not a drop. I measured the brew temp. with a meat thermometer stuck in the grounds at 202 degrees. Any coffee maker will overflow all over the counter if the pot isn't correctly positioned. It's easy to position correctly and a quick peak at the pot:drip hole makes it obvious if it's where it belongs. Some reviews complain about difficulty in pouring water from carafe to the water tank. Could be, I've got a kitchen faucet that lets me stick the faucet right into the tank so it's not a problem for me. It's probably time... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Coffee...Until it Stopped Working After About 25 Pots, August 6, 2006
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 40616 Stainless-Steel 12-Cup Electric Percolator (Kitchen)
Before I purchased this coffee pot about a year ago, I read reviews by others who said 'good coffee but lasted only a few months.' I thought to myself...'oh, those people must have been the unlucky few who got bad units...or they emersed the pot and ruined it.' I should have listened to their 'don't buy' pleas, and hope others will listen to my message of warning.

I loved this coffee pot. Rich, strong, hot coffee, and great classic looks. My only complaint was that compared to other percolators I've used, this one is noisy. It makes a loud popping sound while brewing. I never emersed the unit, and was always very careful to avoid letting any water get near the base of the unit when washing it.

I bought this pot a year ago, and used it about twice a MONTH. Yesterday morning, I attempted to make coffee but got only the same 'beige water' that others have reported. Tried again today thinking maybe it was just a fluke, and got a second pot of luke warm... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Honeymoon is over, August 16, 2006
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 40616 Stainless-Steel 12-Cup Electric Percolator (Kitchen)
After just 4 months of minimal use (Monday mornings only), our attractive Hamilton Beach 12 cup suddenly quit. I should have listened. It produces only weak, warm clear coffee as of yesterday.
Irreconcilable differences. The required $9.95 shipping to return to the manufacturer is an insult. Good bye Hamilton Beach

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Coffee Maker, April 22, 2005
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 40616 Stainless-Steel 12-Cup Electric Percolator (Kitchen)
The Hamilton electric percolator is a well-priced, effecient coffeemaker that looks good in the kitchen as well. I enjoy not having to use paper filters that give a paper taste. The brewing is fast and just the right temperature. Only downside is that the outside becomes very hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'ol faithful brews a reliable, delicious cup of joe, January 10, 2003
I've happilly enjoyed Farberware's larger 20-cup electric percolator that is still brewing some wonderful coffee after 10 years. All I had to replace was the electric cord, which petered out after 3 years.

I've had this model for a few months and think that it will also last a long, long time (don't know about the cord, though). This machine looks terrifically retro, is easy to clean and keeps the coffee consistenly hot for hours. After tasting coffee here, you won't go back to your old drip machine.

My advice to you is:

1. Don't overfill the basket with grinds, because it's very easy to make a STRONG cup of coffee with this. We like strong coffee, so this is a good thing.

2. Clean it w/soap & water as soon as you are finished with it to protect the pot. I also clean it out with Dip-It every 6 weeks or so to remove the coffee stains from the inside and make it shiny and new-looking.

3. At most supermarkts you can buy little paper disc filters that sit in the bottom... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Farberware's not what it used to be, March 7, 2003
By A Customer
First, I have to say these units really do make the very best tasting coffee. But, I think Farberware's manufacturing quality has taken a nose-dive at some point over the last twenty years.

Both my mom and my mother-in-law used these Farberware percolators for years and years without breakdowns. In fact, my mother-in-law's 8 cupper is still going strong and she's been using it since before I met my wife in 1980. Then, about 21 years ago, we got a 12-cup Farberware percolator for a wedding present and used it for over 15 years without any problem. It ceased operation one morning and I assigned it to old age. 15+ years is all I could ask of a product that's used almost every day even though it has no moving parts.

However, since then, probably around 1996-1997, we've owned three other Farberware percolators, all 12-cup models. Each one has had one or more problem including broken top, broken base, broken handle, bad cord and electrical shorting. Now, I wouldn't say we pamper... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Little Perc in Town, April 27, 2005

This review is from: Farberware FCP240 2-4-Cup Percolator, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
For the coffee traditionalist AND for those who long for the taste and smell of home!

This little perc has been a presence in our family for thirty or forty years. After I left home several decades ago, I evolved into a coffee press/Peet's fanatic myself, but when I brought my parents to live with me, the little Farberware Perc came with them, and I quickly reverted back to that fresh perked taste and smell. The coffee makes up fast and goes fast, so you never have that old perked coffee smell in your house or that syrupy brown gunk to deal with, and these chubby little Farberware droids last forever. Fortunately my folks decided they liked Maxwell House Colombian better than the Master Blend, and we brew several pots of this delicious liquid a day.

Warning: do not compare this coffee experience to your Peet's or Zabar's cafe presse - instead think of diners and grandma's house!
